Abel Tasman Park from the Water
This trip was soooooo much fun!! We had a small group, myself and some kids (20's) from a Kiwi Experience group. On one of the activities (not this one) the guide told me that Kiwi activity guides (rafting, walks, bungy, etc.) refer to the Kiwi Experience bus as the 'Gina Lina. That's because every day a bus rolls up and delivers 15-20 samples of fresh.

Our first stop, in Frenchman's Bay

I took this picture of this standing wave in the water that was moving out of the bay. The tide was moving out at the time (about 11am) and the current looked really strong. Kinda hard to see in a photograph. |

After coffee, we set out on the water for a bit more paddling. We landed at Fisherman's Island for lunch. Another group from Kaiteriteri Kayaks also stopped for lunch at this island. Their trip was a "Maori Cultural Experience", so they got to do dances on the beach. Looked like a lot of fun.

The most fun part of the day came after lunch. When we stopped for coffee and lunch our guide ("Taz", because although a Kiwi, he had lived in Tasmania) set out a square tarp and kept referring to it a a sail. I thought it a little odd, as it was not sewn robustly enough to be a sail, but whatever. Once we were launched, Taz had us put our kayaks beam-to-beam to create a decent size raft. We then tied two corners of the tarp to two paddles, and these paddles were held vertical by the rear kayakers on the two outside kayaks. These vertical paddles created the masts. The two loose corners of the tarp were held by the front kayakers, with the center kayakers also holding the tarp, so the four of them created a defacto boom. In the afternoon, the winds come out of the north and carry straight down the coast of the park. So, we were able to complete a considerable distance, just being carried by the wind. Great fun! |
