When the canal system was built to connect Moscow to the oceans, several villages were directly in the path decreed by central planning.  Too Bad!!!  Usually the churches were built on the highest part of the land, and were the tallest buildings of the village.

The reality is that Stalin used his Gulag system of forced labor to build the canals.  It is estimated that over 100,000 were killed during the first winter of construction.
