I spent several days in Far Northland, staying at Waipapakauri Beach, and taking an organised tour up to the top of the peninsula, all the way to Cape Reinga.
The best way to see far Northland is to take an organised tour. The tour will get you to places that you cannot access whilst travelling alone. There are several companies offering tours, and while most are the same, the trip I took included a stop at the Gumdiggers' Park, which I do not think is included in the other itineraries on offer.
90 Mile beach is not passable when the tide is high. So, the trips are arranged in a loop, and the direction of travel is determined by the tide table. If the tide is out in the morning, the trips run up the beach in the morning, and take the inland route in the afternoon. Such was the case for my trip. |

We started by going: | |
Up 90 mile beach - the Mercedes
then further up the beach, turning inland at Te Paki Stream for some:
Sand Sledding | |
Then further up to the top of the peninsula to:
Cape Reinga, including the Tree and lunch at Taputaputa Bay
A stop at the beautiful | |
Rarawa Beach | |
The trip concluded with a stop at the Gumdiggers' Park. This is a former Kauri Gumdiggers camp that has been restored over time to resemble the state of affairs when Kauri Gum was extracted, late 1800s-early 1900s.
